When you’re planning to rebuild or refurbish your patio, walkway or driveway, one decision that you’ll have to make is the material type that you intend to use for your project. Below are five reasons why concrete interlocking pavers are superior to crushed gravel, asphalt and even concrete slab.
Concrete interlocking pavers have the physical capability of carrying four times the weight of regular concrete slab. Whereas most concrete slab can withstand a psi as high as 2000, concrete pavers can withstand a psi of 8000, which is a huge difference. In addition to their superior strength, concrete pavers are less prone to breaking down as time passes due to traffic. Gravel is never meant to be permanent and must be refilled at specific intervals and as a consequence does not function well as a surface material which is long lasting for areas such as the patio or driveway.
The best material for a patio, driveway or walkway is one that is low in maintenance, and concrete pavers fit the bill nicely. The only maintenance that is required is resealing, which only has to be done every 18 months or so depending on the level of traffic it receives. Additionally, joint sand might have to be added periodically to replace that which has been washed or swept away.
In the rare event that your interlocking paves are stained or damaged, you will only have to remove the paver that is damaged and put in a replacement. By comparison, repairing asphalt or concrete slab is far more difficult, not to mention expensive, and will require resurfacing work that is time consuming. This will have to be done multiple times over the lifetime of the material. Gravel is a hassle because it constantly has to be refilled; otherwise you will end up with an uneven surface.
Property owners around the country have been asking for a material that is both durable and flexible, which can adjust to environmental conditions while preventing cracking and seismic distortions. Concrete interlocking pavers meet all this criteria. Unlike slabs, it is flexible which means that it is less vulnerable to cracking or shrinking over time. Also, while asphalt is susceptible to softening due to higher temperatures, concrete pavers will not.
Traditional flooring materials such as gravel, asphalt or concrete are exceptionally limited when it comes to styles, textures and color choices and as a consequence have lower aesthetic appeal. Interlocking pavers, on the other hand will provide buyers with infinite variety in terms of patterns, colors, finishes and styles, which means that you will end up with a walkway, driveway or patio which is 100% unique and unlike any other surface material in the world.
When you consider the strength, durability, beauty and ease of maintenance of concrete pavers, it is difficult to justify purchasing any other material. Sure, interlocking pavers may cost more up front, but this is because they’re worth it.
